Mattress cleaning in Elkhorn, and where an old one can go
We clean mattresses in Elkhorn homes. If the bed is leaving instead, the first question is whether your address sits inside Omaha city limits: Elkhorn became part of Omaha when an annexation ordinance took effect March 24, 2005, but some Elkhorn mailing addresses are outside the city and use a private hauler instead of the city's programs.

Inside or outside the Omaha city limits
Elkhorn’s annexation fight is the reason this question exists. In early 2005 Elkhorn tried to annex surrounding sanitary and improvement districts (SIDs) to grow past 10,000 people, and Omaha passed its own ordinance first. The Nebraska Supreme Court’s 2007 opinion describes that race; the result is that the old City of Elkhorn is now Omaha, while land outside the annexed area stayed outside the city.
For a mattress, the split works like this:
- Inside Omaha city limits. Your Elkhorn address gets the City of Omaha programs: the free Fall Cleanup Saturdays (October 3, 10, 17 and 24, 2026, 9 AM to 2 PM, one quadrant per date) and the River City bulky program at 6404 S 60th St, where a $15 fee at the first visit of the year buys 4 dump vouchers. Our Omaha mattress disposal guide has the checklist for both.
- Outside city limits. The city programs don’t apply. Papillion Sanitation, which lists Elkhorn among the areas it serves outside Omaha’s limits, takes mattresses on a scheduled bulk pickup for an extra fee, and its residential page says mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic first.
Wasteline’s address lookup settles which side you’re on. When Papillion Sanitation’s own lookup sees an address inside the city, it sends the resident back to Wasteline.
Elkhorn housing by the numbers
The Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey puts the median year built for homes in ZIP 68022 at 2011, plus or minus two years. About 52% of its 13,457 housing units were built in 2010 or later and about 7% before 1970. For comparison, the median for the City of Omaha as a whole is 1973, with about 46% of homes built before 1970.
Those figures describe Elkhorn houses, not the beds inside them. A 2016 house can hold a mattress that has moved three times, so the age of the home doesn’t change how we clean. The survey also doesn’t record basements, so we can’t say how many Elkhorn bedrooms are below grade. If yours is, our Omaha basement humidity guide covers what July air does down there.
If you suspect bed bugs in Elkhorn
Douglas County Health Department’s pest page says bed bugs have not been shown to spread disease and that the department’s role with them is education. For an Elkhorn home that means the call goes to a licensed pest professional, with the county’s Environmental Health line, (402) 444-7485, for questions. We don’t treat bed bugs; cleaning comes after treatment, not instead of it. Sleep Sanitation explains how bed bugs differ from dust mites and bed mites. This page is general information, not medical advice.
Finding your way, for orientation only
ZIP 68022 covers Elkhorn on the western edge of Douglas County. Pheasant Point Landfill, the drop-off of last resort in the Omaha guide, is north of Elkhorn at Highway 36 and 216th Street; call (866) 909-4458 before hauling a mattress there, because the city guide says fees may apply. Check your care label and warranty terms before booking; the areas page lists what stays the same at every address.
What we don’t know
- Which Cleanup Saturday covers your street. Wasteline publishes a quadrant map; we haven’t matched Elkhorn streets to it.
- Bulk pickup prices outside the city. Papillion Sanitation says there is an extra fee but doesn’t post it, and other haulers set their own terms.
Elkhorn questions
Can an Elkhorn household use Omaha's free Cleanup Saturdays?
Only if the address is a City of Omaha household. Wasteline's address lookup answers that. If you're outside the city limits, ask your hauler about a scheduled bulky pickup instead.
Is Elkhorn its own city?
Not since 2005. Omaha's annexation ordinance took effect March 24, 2005, and the Nebraska Supreme Court upheld it in City of Elkhorn v. City of Omaha (2007). Elkhorn remains a ZIP code (68022) and a community name.
Who hauls trash for an Elkhorn address?
It depends on the city limits. Inside them, the City of Omaha programs apply. Papillion Sanitation serves Omaha addresses outside the city limits, Elkhorn included, and points customers to Wasteline's lookup to check which side they're on.
