Mattress cleaning in Ralston, a city of older homes inside the metro
We clean mattresses in Ralston. Ralston is its own city in Douglas County, not part of Omaha, so Omaha's Cleanup Saturdays and River City program aren't for Ralston households. The City of Ralston contracts with Papillion Sanitation and includes trash on your water bill; a mattress goes out on a scheduled bulk pickup from that hauler.

Ralston’s trash setup
The City of Ralston’s trash page fits in a few lines. The city contracts with Papillion Sanitation for trash and recycling, and trash service is included in your water bill. Grass and leaves go out during two windows, the last two weeks of May and again in November. When a holiday closes the landfill, pickup slides a day.
A mattress doesn’t fit any of that. Papillion Sanitation’s residential page says it takes furniture and mattresses that don’t fit in a cart on a separate, scheduled bulk route, for an extra fee, and that mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic first. Call Papillion Sanitation before the mattress goes to the curb; Ralston’s page sends hauler questions there.
Because Ralston is a separate city, Omaha’s free Cleanup Saturdays are not an option. Wasteline opens them to City of Omaha households, and a Ralston address isn’t one.
Ralston housing by the numbers
Ralston’s housing is the oldest on our area list. The Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey puts the median year built for its 2,987 housing units at 1972, plus or minus three years, nearly identical to Omaha’s 1973. About 45% were built before 1970, about 22% before 1960, and only about 18% in 2000 or later.
An older Ralston house doesn’t mean an older mattress, and it doesn’t change how we clean one. Where it can matter is getting a mattress out for disposal, so measure the stairway before you buy a replacement. The survey doesn’t record basements, so we can’t tell you how many Ralston bedrooms are below grade. If yours is, our Omaha basement humidity guide covers summer conditions down there.
Bed bugs and the Douglas County Health Department
Ralston is in Douglas County, so the Douglas County Health Department is the county agency. Its pest page says bed bugs have not been shown to be a vector of disease and that the department’s role with them is education. In a Ralston home that leaves the job to a licensed pest professional, with cleaning after treatment. Sleep Sanitation’s guide to dust mites, bed bugs and bed mites sorts out which is which. This page is general information, not medical advice.
