How to read Omaha's pollen count, and what it can't tell you about a bedroom

JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec

The Douglas County Health Department supplies the numbers in the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley pollen bulletin, UNMC's allergy division posts its own on Tuesdays and Thursdays in peak season, and NAB Station 33 counts from a Bellevue rooftop. On October 2, 2026, DCHD had weeds at 12, a moderate count; all three sample outdoor air, not a bedroom.

Count to watch: Douglas County Health Department numbers, published in the NWS Omaha/Valley "Pollution Index/Pollen Count" bulletin.

Five NWS Omaha/Valley bulletins, Monday, September 28 to Friday, October 2, 2026; the last went out at 9:58 a.m. Open it

UNMC’s sampler runs for seven days at a stretch; lab staff then stain the strip and identify grains under a microscope, which is why its numbers arrive twice a week rather than every morning. Station 33 runs a Burkard trap and a Rotorod side by side on the Bellevue Medical Center roof.

One week of bulletins, September 28 to October 2, 2026

The NWS bulletin gives each DCHD count a word (low, moderate or high) and names the plants behind it, so read the word first, then the plants: the weed count fell from 54 to 1 in four bulletins and climbed back to 12 on the fifth, with ragweed named on four of the five days. One NWS bulletin is one day, so October 1’s weed count of 1 didn’t mean the season was over: DCHD had 12 the next morning.

What an outdoor count can’t tell you

DCHD, UNMC and Station 33 all sample outdoor air, and none of the three says how much pollen came in on clothes, a dog or an open window, or measures bedding. In May 2022, UNMC’s Andrew Rorie suggested closing house windows when counts are high, which is the step that connects a public count to the room you sleep in.

We don’t count pollen either. Sleep Sanitation sets out what a mattress cleaning can and can’t do for allergies. Check your mattress’s care label and warranty terms before booking.

Asked about Omaha's pollen count

Who supplies the numbers in the NWS Omaha/Valley pollen bulletin?

Three places. The Douglas County Health Department supplies the counts in the NWS Omaha/Valley bulletin. UNMC's Division of Allergy and Immunology posts counts on Tuesdays and Thursdays in peak season from a sampler on Durham Research Center II. The National Allergy Bureau lists Station 33, run by The Asthma & Allergy Center in Bellevue.

Was the pollen count high in Omaha on October 2, 2026?

No. The NWS bulletin that morning had DCHD's trees at 2 (low, mostly elm), weeds at 12 (moderate, pigweed and ragweed) and grass at 2 (low). DCHD's weeds on Monday, September 28 were 54, which the bulletin called high.

Does a mattress cleaning change what DCHD or UNMC count?

No. DCHD's outdoor sampler and UNMC's rooftop sampler measure outdoor air, and we make no pollen claim. A visit includes two checks, and neither measures pollen: moisture after the job and the dust mite (bed mite) sensor on our UV-C vacuum.
