Omaha summer humidity and basement bedrooms

Omaha's air holds the highest moisture in July and August. NOAA's normals for Eppley Airfield put the average July dew point near 66°F, against 16°F in January. A basement guest room that stays cooler than the outdoor dew point in summer can collect moisture, so that is the room and season to watch.

Basement guest room calendar for Omaha

  • June, when Eppley’s average dew point reaches 61°F: put a hygrometer in the basement guest room and write down the humidity. The EPA’s line is 60 percent relative humidity.
  • July, the peak at 66°F: keep a closed basement room’s door open or the air moving between guests, and run a dehumidifier whenever the hygrometer reads above 60 percent.
  • August, still 64°F and the second wettest month at Eppley (4.60 in): leave the dehumidifier running; August rain nearly matches May’s 4.66 in.
  • October, when the dew point has fallen to 41°F: check the underside of the mattress for spots or a musty smell, and if it sits directly on a slab floor, lift it onto a frame or foundation.

Can you schedule a mattress cleaning in an Omaha summer?

Yes. After any visit, the bed stays unmade until it is dry to the touch, and we run a moisture check after service before we leave. With July’s outdoor dew point averaging 66°F at Eppley, an open window lets moisture in, so keep the air conditioning or a dehumidifier running in the room instead. Sleep Sanitation covers what affects this in how quickly a treated mattress should dry. Check your mattress care label and warranty terms before any cleaning.

If a basement bed is past saving, our Omaha disposal guide lists where it can go.

What we don’t know

  • Your basement. Eppley Airfield is one station; your room depends on insulation, grading and how it is used.
  • Whether a musty smell is mold. Only an inspection can say, and we tell you if a bed should be replaced.

Questions Omaha readers ask

Is it a bad idea to have a mattress cleaned in an Omaha summer?

No. Our steam is low moisture, the bed stays unmade until it is dry to the touch, and we run a moisture check after service. An Omaha July averages a 66°F dew point at Eppley, so keep the air conditioning or a dehumidifier running in the room rather than opening the windows.

My basement guest bed smells musty. Can cleaning fix that?

Sometimes. A musty smell can mean moisture or mold in the mattress, and we inspect before we treat. If the bed has been damp for a long time, we will tell you it should be replaced rather than cleaned.

What should the humidity be in a bedroom?

The EPA's mold guidance says to keep indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. Omaha's July dew point near 66°F is why a basement room can run above that line in summer, and a hygrometer shows where yours sits.
