Council Bluffs vs Omaha: mattress disposal rules
Council Bluffs will pick a mattress up at your curb, twice a year, by appointment, if it is bagged or completely shrink wrapped. Omaha has no curbside pickup for mattresses; you drop it off at a Cleanup Saturday, at River City under the city program, or at Pheasant Point.

Omaha checklist
The short version is below; the details, including River City’s residency proof and hours, are on our Omaha disposal guide.
- October 2026: four free Cleanup Saturdays, one area of the city each week.
- Any other time: River City under the city program if you live inside Omaha city limits, or Pheasant Point.
Before you wrap it
A mattress sealed in plastic for disposal is the end of the road. If what bothers you is a stain, an odor or a bed you bought used, that is a cleaning question, and Sleep Sanitation’s guide to sanitizing a used mattress covers it. Our Omaha service covers Council Bluffs too.
What we don’t know
- Whether Omaha’s Cleanup sites turn away out-of-city residents at the gate. The city says the event is for City of Omaha households; we haven’t seen how it is checked.
- Council Bluffs pickup lead time. The city doesn’t publish how far ahead to book.
Questions Omaha readers ask
Can a Council Bluffs resident use Omaha's free Cleanup Saturday?
The City of Omaha describes Cleanup as open to City of Omaha households, and its River City subsidy is for residents inside Omaha city limits. Its bulky program page says residents living outside Omaha pay the full cost of disposal.
Does Council Bluffs take a mattress that isn't wrapped?
The city's pickup rules say all mattresses and box springs must be bagged or completely covered in plastic shrink wrap, so plan for that before your pickup day.
Can I combine a bulky pickup with an appliance pickup in Council Bluffs?
No. The city says bulk waste pickups cannot be combined, and appliances have their own two pickups per year.
