A new dog or cat in an Omaha home: a plan for the bed

Decide where the new pet sleeps before the first night, and keep a waterproof protector on your mattress for the first few weeks. Accidents happen while a dog or cat learns the house; ordinary urine accidents are included in our $249 first-mattress price. In Omaha, dogs and cats must be licensed through the Nebraska Humane Society within 30 days of getting them. Call or text (402) 512-5658.

Where should a new pet sleep in the first week?

Pick the spot before you drive home from 90th and Fort. Shelter pets are learning a new house, a new routine and new people at once, and accidents in the first weeks are common. A crate or dog bed in the bedroom, or a closed bedroom door, is easier than retraining later. If the pet will share the bed, put a waterproof mattress protector on first.

What does Omaha require in the first 30 days?

A license. The Nebraska Humane Society runs pet licensing for the City of Omaha, including Elkhorn. Dogs, cats and mini pigs need a license at 4 months of age, and you have 30 days after getting a new pet. NHS needs proof of a current rabies vaccination, and the altered-pet rate is lower than the intact rate. Omaha allows 3 dogs and 5 cats per household without a pet avocation permit.

What if someone in the house has allergies?

Go by the evidence, not the breed. The AAAAI says there are no truly hypoallergenic breeds of dog or cat, and that keeping pets out of the bedroom can reduce allergy symptoms because you spend about eight hours a day there. It also notes dander lingers on furniture. A mattress cleaning removes dust, hair and dander from the mattress surface, seams and tufts with HEPA vacuuming, but it isn’t an allergy treatment; an allergist is.

What do we do about urine and odor on the mattress?

Ordinary urine accidents, normal stains and pet odor are included in the first-mattress price. We treat urine with enzymes, work the surface, seams and tufts with low-moisture dry vapor steam, then HEPA vacuuming and UV-C light treatment. Every visit includes a moisture check after service and the built-in bed mite sensor on our UV-C vacuum. If a mattress is soaked through, we say so at inspection and quote any surcharge before starting. Hosts dealing with guests’ pets can read pet urine in midtown short-term rentals.

What does it cost in Omaha?

The first mattress is $249, any size, with normal stains, pet odor and ordinary urine accidents included. Each additional full, queen or king in the same visit is $199, each additional kids' bed (twin or full) is $149, and underside treatment is +$50–$75 per mattress. Severe or biohazard cases carry a surcharge we quote before starting.

Every visit includes UV-C light treatment, HEPA vacuuming and two checks: a moisture check after service and the built-in bed mite sensor on our UV-C vacuum. The 72-hour bedroom CO₂ test is a separate optional service, priced by quote, and it isn't a medical test. See Omaha pricing for every rate.

Questions Omaha households ask

Should a new shelter dog sleep on our bed?

That is your call, but decide before the first night so the dog learns one rule. If anyone in the house has pet allergies, the AAAAI says keeping pets out of the bedroom can reduce symptoms, because you spend about eight hours a day there.

Our new dog had an accident on the mattress. Is that extra?

Ordinary urine accidents are included in the $249 first-mattress price, along with normal stains and pet odor. We use enzyme treatment for urine. Severe or repeated soaking that needs more work carries a surcharge we quote before starting.

Does cleaning the mattress make it safe for someone with a pet allergy?

We don't make that promise. The AAAAI notes pet dander lingers on furniture and can take six months or more to clear after a pet is gone. Cleaning removes what is on and near the mattress surface, but an allergist is the right person for a pet-allergy plan.

Do I really have to license a cat in Omaha?

Yes. Under the City of Omaha rules NHS administers, dogs, cats and mini pigs are licensed at 4 months of age, and you have 30 days after getting a new pet. Fees, deadlines and the online form are on the NHS pet licensing page.

What does it cost if the pet has been sleeping on several beds?

$249 for the first mattress, any size, then $199 for each additional full, queen or king and $149 for each additional kids' bed (twin or full) in the same visit. See Omaha pricing.
